lyrics
TO HERE FROM THERE
by
Robert Alan Wilders
There’s an old man sittin’ on the stair.
His head in his hand without a care.
His life is gone but he don’t know where.
Wonders how he got TO HERE FROM THERE.
Well his name’s John Robbin. “How do you do?”
Born in Eatontown back in ’32.
Back when the world was fresh and new.
On the Jersey Shore with an ocean view.
Got a job at a gas station in Red Bank.
Went fishin’ for blues with his brother Frank.
They’d dive off the bridge just for a prank.
He was at Ken’s Landing when the big boat sank.
When the war broke out he chose to enlist.
Hugged his Dad goodbye, his Mama’s cheek he kissed.
Came home with shrapnel in his wrist.
From then on he was never able to make a fist.
Married his high school sweetheart had his only child.
The kid grew up adventurous and wild.
But he graduated from Princeton made them both so proud.
His wife she cried, he just sat there and smiled.
Well he saved up his money put it down on a home.
Went into debt on a thirty year loan.
His son moved out left them both all alone.
He went into the hospital to remove a kidney stone.
Now his brother Frank died in the Wells Factory Fire.
His son married a girl named McIntire.
He worked at the Courthouse till it came time to retire.
Stopped sleeping with his wife ‘cause they both lost the desire.
So there’s an old man sittin’ on the stair.
His head in his hand without a care.
His life is gone but he don’t know where.
Wonders how he got TO HERE FROM THERE.
Yes he wonders how he got TO HERE FROM THERE.
Yes he wonders how he got TO HERE FROM THERE.
